Anniversary

September 11, 2001…

I don’t have to tell you what happened on this day in United States history. Most of you can remember where you were when you heard the news of the hijacked planes. You probably remember all too well the flood of emotions you felt as you watched the news coverage. As this weekend marks the 10th anniversary of those tragic attacks many of us will reflect on this momentous occasion, honoring those who died and celebrating survival and recovery.

Please allow me to tell you happened on this day in Portland, Oregon history. In the basement of The First Baptist Church, a small group of homeless youth were invited in for meal. Dinner & A Movie (D&M) was launched. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we would like to thank each and every one of you that has supported D&M. You have made survival and recovery possible for many homeless youth and impoverished families.

We have seen hardened street youth learn to trust and love. They are breaking the barriers of their addictions. Many are now raising children of their own, breaking the cycle of abuse, by raising their children in a healthy manner despite the way they were raised. They have survived the abuse they suffered and are triumphing.

Many people are looking for ways to commemorate this historic weekend. I can’t think of a better way than honoring something positive that happened on 9/11. We would love to hear from you – please send us any stories of your time volunteering or changes you’ve seen or experienced at D&M. (Please let me know if we can post them on our website.) Also, consider how you can get more involved and continue to offer hope to more homeless youth and impoverished families (See the list below for ideas.

Sincerely,
Jen Lawrence

Make more stories of survival and recovery possible

  • Become a Champion for the Children – Make a pledge of $50 or more per month for a year. This money will allow us to to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the youth and families we serve. Please send your pledge to jen@dinnerandamoviepdx.com
  • Host A BBQ with a Purpose – this is a simple event where you will help spread the word about D&M and the need for recovery mentoring in the lives of those we serve. I would love to get you more information about this. Just e-mail jen@dinnerandamoviepdx.com
  • Start a Diaper drive – we provide diapers for around 20 children a week. This is a lot of diapers and they are not cheap. It would be great if you were the spearhead of a drive at your work or school. Contact jen@dinnerandamoviepdx.com.
  • Support a mentor – Our mentors are the long term stability that makes D&M different from other programs. They are there to listen, counsel, comfort and support. There are more youth and families in need of this mentoring but we need more mentors. Make a financial gift of any amount to help make this possible at www.dinnerandamoviepdx.com or D&M PO Box 28237 Portland, OR 97228.
  • Volunteer – Sign up to cook or serve at our family dinners on Tuesday night. Contact jen@dinnerandamoviepdx.com
