September 11, 2001…

I don’t have to tell you what happened on this day in United States history. Most of you can remember where you were when you heard the news of the hijacked planes. You probably remember all too well the flood of emotions you felt as you watched the news coverage. As this weekend marks the 10th anniversary of those tragic attacks many of us will reflect on this momentous occasion, honoring those who died and celebrating survival and recovery.

Please allow me to tell you happened on this day in Portland, Oregon history. In the basement of The First Baptist Church, a small group of homeless youth were invited in for meal. Dinner & A Movie (D&M) was launched. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we would like to thank each and every one of you that has supported D&M. You have made survival and recovery possible for many homeless youth and impoverished families.

We have seen hardened street youth learn to trust and love. They are breaking the barriers of their addictions. Many are now raising children of their own, breaking the cycle of abuse, by raising their children in a healthy manner despite the way they were raised. They have survived the abuse they suffered and are triumphing.

Many people are looking for ways to commemorate this historic weekend. I can’t think of a better way than honoring something positive that happened on 9/11. We would love to hear from you – please send us any stories of your time volunteering or changes you’ve seen or experienced at D&M. (Please let me know if we can post them on our website.) Also, consider how you can get more involved and continue to offer hope to more homeless youth and impoverished families (See the list below for ideas.
